Asian hornet

The invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) was first found in Denmark on Funen in June 2025. It hunts honey bees at the hive entrance.

Identification

  • Dark, almost black body with a narrow yellow band at the rear of the abdomen.
  • Yellow legs (hence also called the yellow-legged hornet).
  • Slightly smaller than the native European hornet.
  • Hovers in front of the entrance and catches bees in flight.

If you see one

  1. Take a photo or video.
  2. Report the sighting on arter.dk.
  3. Also notify Danmarks Biavlerforening (the Danish Beekeepers' Association) at dansk@biavl.dk.
  4. Never remove a nest yourself. It must be done by professionals.
